My job shares great life stories that happens on the plane happy and sad, like to share this one, wish more people were more caring like this guy in first class who gave up his seat to this little girl. Very touching, had me in tears, here is the storie. Six-year-old Regan was bracing for a long, lonely flight from ORD to IAD last month. The first-grader, whose mother had recently died, was leaving Chicago – traveling as an unaccompanied minor – for a new life with her father, who would meet her at the end of her flight. When an ORD customer service representative shared Regan’s sad story with the crew of Flight 1103 on Oct. 6, the little girl’s personal tragedy brought out the best in our co-workers and one generous first-class customer. “It was very emotional for all of us,” said EWR Captain Brian Applegate. The crew met Regan and made it their mission to boost her spirits for the nearly two-hour flight. Brian said he and EWR First Officer Joe Williams, both of whom are dads, invited Regan to join them on the flight deck before takeoff. “She was very quiet when she came and sat down. It took a lot of effort, but we got her laughing,” he said. “We kept her up there until the last possible minute. She just loved it.” When first-class customer Reed M. overheard the crew discussing Regan, he exchanged seats with her and rode to IAD in the economy cabin of the 757. Reed, who lost his sister-in-law, a mother, to breast cancer this year, said he was compelled to help. Customer Experience SVP Martin Hand said United would send Reed a thank-you letter and give him a six-month United Club membership. All the IAD flight attendants – Laura Couk, Gavin Haylett, Sharon Kurnia and Larry Proctor – looked after Regan during the journey. Regan told them she wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up, Laura said. The little girl enjoyed her ride in first class, where she kept busy watching a Scooby Doo movie. At the end of the flight, several onboard co-workers walked Regan off the plane, all the way to her waiting father. “She held on to our hands really tight walking down the jetbridge,” Brian said. “It was just one of those beautiful experiences.”
