My latest article as published by the SUNDAY INDEPENDENT yesterday is going to piss many of you off. So if you know yourself to be a very emotional person, I suggest you do not open this link. An excerpt from the article asserts: The murder of Meyiwa forces us to interrogate deeply how this systematic subjugation of black people gives rise to black-on-black violence. It must also make us question the elevating of certain victims of crime to levels not accorded to ordinary people. Much as I loved Meyiwa, I am not comfortable with the way his murder and those of other celebrities, members of the political elite, business people and renowned socialites are treated with the kind of urgency that murders of ordinary people are not. I find it extremely unjust how crime becomes an issue only when it visits certain people... ...The murder rate increased from an average of 45 murders a day to 47 a day. Using Statistics South Africa’s 2013 mid-year figures, the number of murders in 2013/14 was 32.2 to every 100 000 people, up from 31.1 in 2012/13. The police have continually said there is a backlog in investigating most of these cases. More crimes go cold than are solved. Thousands of families have not had justice. Why, then, are murders of certain people elevated to the status of a national issue, while others are allowed to go cold without as much effort being put into bringing the criminals to book?... iol.co.za/sundayindependent/everyone-is-equal-even-murder-victims-1.1780949#.VGpTXygwJSU
