My life has been punctuated with ironies, being on the wrong side of overwhelming statistics, and being in situations that are too ridiculous to be true. But I have survived and even thrived. Yesterday morning, the company that I work for (for 5.5 years) , took the liberty of informing the staff that 1 in 6 will be retrenched. This comes just over 4 months from my retirement. If I opt for the package, the very minimum that could be legally offered, I will be paid until the day before I am due to retire. But the point is that the group makes annual record profits and my company is still in its infancy and not yet profitable, but the greedy top bean keepers are desperate to add a few cents to the dividend at the expence of severely disrupting the lives of over 100 employees, many of whom are in very vulnerable financial circumstances. Management took the liberty to tell them only recently that they did an excellent collective job in trying circumstances, and we watched the positive blurb about it 3 weeks ago as they took the liberty of announcing the financial results in the company CCTV . The timing is great, because this month is bonus month and next month increases are due. Most employees now would be happyto keep their jobs. But I am at liberty to end my 47.5 year career being retrenched. Heck I might even qualify for UIF. If so I would definiely take the liberty!
