My long time co-worker and friend was laid to rest today. I wasnt there. My daughter needed me, and so I went where I was needed. Yet, it was interesting how I felt the presence of my lovely friend, a dedicated mother, with me as I walked and talked through this day with my daughter. Without intention, we found ourselves discussing the mystery of untimely deaths and the importance of nurturing the relationships we have in a deep and mindful way....everyday. As we were having lunch on a patio on this beautiful breezy day, our conversation weaving and dipping into the mysteries of life and death like the autumn wind, I felt as if Sophia was with us, sitting at the table, ready to crack a smart remark to wake us up out of todays sorrow and the unnecessary forecasting of incomprehensible fates. We found a way to laugh and found a comforting solidarity in the mother-daughter bond that my friend greatly valued. We all cultivate and gain different blessings and strengths from those that are dear to us, and sometimes dont even realize it until they are gone. We decided to notice those blessings and strengths why we are present, to acknowledge and nurture them, and to make the time we have with each other valuable and genuinely kind. This, I find, is the best way for me to honor the life of my friend, Sophia.
