My mama was a devout Church of Christ member who made sure that my brother, sister and I attended twice on Sunday and every Wednesday night. She was a true disciple who boldly knock on our neighbors doors to share Gods plan of salvation through a film strip series. She believed that America was her mission field. I cannot even begin fathom the number lives she led to Christ before God took her home. She taught me and my siblings well, and I know that the Great Commission is my responsibility until the day God calls me home. I have always felt that no matter where I am, its my moment to reach out to others - sort of like mom. Yesterday, Victoria and I volunteered all day at our favorite place, our Fort Lee USO. It was a typical Saturday in which we had planned to delight ourselves in 100% service to our military. Midway through the day, a young Marine walked up to the desk and asked if I knew of a good church he could attend - something a little less traditional. He stated that his mama, a devout Southern Baptist, continued to encourage him to find a local church where he could plant his feet. With total excitement, I shared with him my familys experience at DestinationChurch in Colonial Heights, and we planned to attend the 8:45 AM service. I thought, Bless his heart, that is really early for this young Marine to hail a cab and arrive to service. Before I could say a word, he articulated that he was interested in attending with my family; so, without hesitation, I promised to save him a seat. As we arrived inside the theater, he was standing off to the side waiting for us. My heart was was filled to its brim with emotion. After the service, he stated that he would be back again next week and the week after that. Another USO volunteer heard my testimony I shared with the young Marine. She is an active duty member of our U.S. Navy, mother of two girls, and currently searching for a SPIRIT FILLED church where she and her girls have the opportunity for involvement. I invited her and asked her to look at the web site at the previous services that are available for her review. With a computer on the desk, she opened it up and immediately began to peruse through the praise worship and sermons. Today, her daughter sent a text message thanking me for leading them to Destination Church. America is mission field. No matter where we are, there are people all around us who do not have a personal relationship with God. The Great Commission (Matthew 28: 16 - 20) is every single Christians responsibility every single day, and its doable. Even with the Separation of Church and State, my public school students learn vicariously through my actions and my words. It begins with bowing my head, folding my hands, and silently praying during the 30 seconds moment of silence each school morning. As a result, two of my high school students have asked where I attend church and if they are welcome to attend with my family. If we all take time to share God with our neighbors, our favorite grocery clerk, our acquaintances and others who cross our paths every day, imagine the possibilities. We would share Christ with every single person in America; consequently, therein would lie the natural propensity towards cultural change for many generations. Its that simple.
