My maternal grandmother, Nannie, was an amazing seamstress. She made beautiful clothes for her three girls, quilted, and did unbelievable needlework. Her work was impressive and she was proud of it. My mom shared her skills and creativity by making clothes, costumes, and other items for my brothers and I. As we grew up, our mom did all she could to support us in anything and everything we desired. My mom put her own needs and wants aside for us, including her desire to be creative (paint, decorate, sew, craft). Our homemade clothes and costumes diminished but moms participation in our lives was strong. In Nannies final weeks, maybe months, my mom pulled out her old sewing machine and some of Nannies finest needlework and she got busy. She made my Nannie the most beautiful quilt from Nannies own handiwork. It was my moms first quilting experience and probably one of her mothers proudest moments. The tradition had been passed down. Since Nannies passing, my mom bought a new sewing machine and has taken on several projects. Its wonderful to see the spark in her for something she and her mother loved so dearly. Ive attached pictures of two of her initial projects. The first is a quilt for Owens bed. To say we love it would be an understatement, but I am at a loss for describing something so heartfelt and meaningful. The quilt has an inscription in it for Owen and every inch of it was made with love. She also made a small, matching quilt for Owens stuffed friends with a similar inscription. The second picture consists of the stockings she made for our family in less than one week. These stockings will be cherished for years to come. They may be new, but they are rich in love and history. Thank you, mom, from the bottom of our hearts for creating these items for us to use and cherish. Thank you, Nannie, for passing on your love and passion so that we may have items such as these to remember who we are, where we come from, and to enjoy the simple pleasures in life.
