My memories of Christmas for me are pretty much the same as in the movie “A Christmas Story”. It verges on the edge of being a magical time and still is for me. The magic being mostly about Family. It revolves around my Grandmother’s house and her huge live tree in the corner. Everyone always gathered on Christmas Eve, Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. The smell itself was magical, which was a mixture of evergreen tree, pumpkin pie (made from scratch), and a table loaded with all kinds of food mingled with the smell of burning wood and coal from the stove. Every year Papaw would make a trip “across the mountain” for candy. Now I’m sure the candy could have been found locally but “The Why” of “across the Mountain” was, it was a trip for him. The coffee table was loaded with cream drops, coconut bon-bons, ribbon candy, Brazil nuts, English walnuts, Pecans, Hazel nuts, oranges, tangerines and at least one real coconut. The living room had two couches, a chair by the phone table and Granny’s rocker along with the coffee table. I remember sitting in Granny’s rocker nestled in her lap on Sunday after lunch with her reading the “funnies” to more than one grandchild as her lap was full of children. The Christmas’s that stick out in my mind include a “Josh Randall’s” short Winchester with little white plastic bullets that really shot them across the room. Boy Oh Boy! For me Christmas usually included some kind of Cowboy guns and holster. And then the “You’ll shoot your eye out kid” Christmas. It wasn’t a “Red Ryder” but was a “Daisy” Lever Action rifle. The Ammo itself came in cellophane packs of 50 for a nickel and could be bought alongside the Kit-Kats, Necco candy wafers and the All-day Sugar Daddy caramel suckers at Stine’s Store just a short walk down the road from Granny’s. MERRY CHRISTMAS to all, and to all a Good Night!
