My most favorite Christmas gift came when my mother had been laid - TopicsExpress

My most favorite Christmas gift came when my mother had been laid off from her job as a steelworker in the 1970s, the first female to do the job in Pennsylvania. We had shopped for gifts at the thrift store, and wrapped hand-me-downs from the older siblings to the younger. We made Christmas dinner with food from welfare stamps; and wrapped our tree with wreathes of strung popcorn and paper cut snowflakes. That simple beauty lingers with me. Christmas morning, I unwrapped the best gift I have ever received. My mom had taken clothespins from the back yard line, and hand painted each one as the pieces of a chess board, and then drew the board by hand. We played on that board until the paint chipped away. (Learning the intricacies, my brother went on to compete at state championships at chess.) The Dalai Lama said that, “If you think you’re too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.” Similarly, Rickson Gracie proved with exhaustive example that, “If size mattered, elephants would be kings of the jungle.” Although a humble, heartfelt gift can seem insignificant, especially when others appear glutted with opulence, the humblest present can hold the greatest meaning, and its lesson last the longest. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and that the real gift of family and fellowship will remain with you. Let us strive to make every day Merry, even if in the smallest, most seemingly insignificant act. very respectfully, Scott Sonnon facebook/scottsonnon
