My name is Brendan. All: Hi Brendan! I am a ranked field officer in a lower Blue Mtns Brigade, and I just wanted to say a few things. As a resident of Linksview Rd, Springwood, I have been a subscriber/member of Blue Mountains Firewatch since the proverbial hit the fan last year. This group is an excellent concept, and needs to continue. But! Calm needs to prevail. I get it - when someone hears a siren on Hawkesbury Rd and memories of Oct2013 come flooding back - but the siren is more likely to be a police vehicle or an ambulance than RFS. The smell of smoke in the air during winter months is more likely to be your next door neighbours combustion heater, rather than a full scale inferno in the valley behind your house. I put a post on my personal Facebook page after the fires in Warrimoo last week that was supposed to allude to how well fires are being run these days, and a pat on the back for all the resources that get thrown at it. I think it was poorly worded in the end as I just got a lot of thank you Brendans instead. If there is a fire in your area, it will be attended to. If they despatch helos, its not a time to panic, its a time to be grateful. Choppers arent cheap, and someone with a chequebook cares enough about the welfare of you and your family. If you have an RFS crew in your street - dont be concerned, be grateful. All those people have other jobs, and family. They are giving all their time, energy and years of training to protect you and your home. Above all - you live in the Blue Mountains. We are one of the most Bushfire prone places in the world. Please, please, PLEASE prepare yourself and your property. Preparation, not Panic.
