My name is Gerben Scheepmaker and since the 1st of March I am partly working as a PhD candidate. Commissioned by the Dutch Railways Passenger (NS Reizigers) I have got two days a week to spend on my PhD research. The other three days I am working as a Business Analyst at the Logistic department of NS Reizigers. As Business Analyst my focus is on the long term timetable and rolling stock planning (two to five years ahead). I am specialized in developing models for scenario analyses and models for decision support. The topic of my PhD research is about energy-efficient train driving and timetable design. This is a continuation of my MSc thesis (Civil Engineering) which I have finished in February 2013 at the department Transport & Planning of the TU Delft. I did this research in collaboration with NS Reizigers department Rolling Stock & Energy. In my MSc thesis the objective was to develop a model which determines the energy optimal driving strategy for trains; taking into account the desired robustness, the possibilities for energy-efficient operation and the desired punctuality during the execution of the timetable. The result of this thesis was a validated and verified model which was also successfully implemented real-time in a pilot of NS Reizigers. The aim of my PhD research will be on developing a model to find the optimal distribution of the running time in a timetable. The model thereby takes in to account punctuality, robustness and energy-efficient train driving. The focus will be on finding the most energy-efficient timetable. Dr. Rob Goverde will be my daily supervisor from the TU Delft. If you would like to know more about me, please contact me. I am also curious to know more about you all, so I hope to meet you in person as well. If you have any time, you can visit me (mostly on Fridays) in room number 4.21. Kind regards, Gerben Scheepmaker
