My oldest daughter, Anjali D.V. Shaffer, gave me the # 8. Although I think its a bit silly, I like silly...so, Ill play along! 1. My biggest pet peeve is when people misspell my name. Its not AJ or A.J. or AJay....its Ajay. Please dont take shortcuts and dont be insulted if I correct you. 2. It hurts when Im the # 1 target of my dads insults. I didnt live up to his dreams or standards he expected of me. Im not hurt by his words, Im hurt by the look of disappointment on his face as hes insulting me. Theres nothing I can do to change it...too late, now. He set the bar too high. 3. It hurts me that I let my kids down by breaking up our family. Thats my biggest failure in life....my marriage. My girls deserved better. My parents deserved a caring daughter-in-law. 4. I dont fear death, I fear getting old because Im just not aging very well. 5. I smoke because I actually enjoy it and it relaxes me, not because Im addicted. Everyone has a vice, smoking is mine. Im not proud of it, but I do own it. 6. I have anxiety that my girls will get so busy with their lives that theyll forget about me except a monthly obligatory phone call. I dont know how Ill handle that. In fact, I know I wont handle that too well. It leads me to think Ill die alone. 7. I love the tradition of non-conditional respect for elders we grew with in India. That has stayed with me. I will never ever talk down to or raise my voice to a person who is older than me in age or relationship. I dont see that in the newer generations....and its just wrong and disrespectful. You can agree to disagree without raising your voice or talking down to elders. The new breed is taking it to the level of cursing, insults and getting physical with their elders. To me, its a sin against our culture and the values that have been passed along for many generations. Take a damn chill pill! 8. I prefer chick flicks over action movies. I like a tear jerker over a Rambo type film. I hate movies where women are objectified. Ill watch the Notebook over a Transformer movie any day. Jennifer Lawrence is fast becoming my favorite actress!! What, you thought youd get short answers??? Renuka Das, Lilly Verma, Anita Das
