My only hope is that the ubiquity of such incidents will spark - TopicsExpress

My only hope is that the ubiquity of such incidents will spark something visceral in our society. Until that happens nothing will change. People have to become outraged. Some day, maybe one of these incidents, maybe Eric Garner even, will become symbolic as the seminal event in a civil rights crusade. It may often be about racism, but not always, and not essentially I dont think. It is about abuse of power, total disregard for the Constitution, and the steady slide into a police state. I have experienced it too in my own ways. As I posted recently, racism per se is not the problem. It is an unnatural point of view unknown to any child. Despite depressing evidence to the contrary, I believe fewer children are inheriting this disease. The real problem is access to unchecked power. Abuse of power is the deeper social problem. Without power, hate is impotent, capable of hurting feelings and motivating individual crimes, but nothing on this scale. As a white man I feel just as scared, but for different reasons.
