My own religious upbringing was rather tame. But, combined with my psychology, it was enough to seriously scar me. I know many people who never took religion seriously and simply left it at their parents house when they moved out. But I was very slow to comprehend that so many loving, smart people would indoctrinate kids with so many baseless and morally fraught ideas. I would have been angry and flabbergasted if I had realized it suddenly. As it happened, I grew out of it by the age of 40. In place of anger, I feel compassion, because many religious people are victims. Now, Im animated by helping others who want out, and by deep concern about the power of religion over human psychology.
