My parents had a special cabinet within their dresser; a larger center door that would open to three smaller drawers filled with precious things. When I was a child I loved perusing those drawers with permission and under close supervision, of course. The items could be removed one at a time, examined and marveled at, then placed back just like Mom had them. The contents: four baby books, Mom and Dads first family bible, their wedding photos, birth certificates, old coins, locks of fine baby hair, old jewelry and lots of other memorabilia that was considered sacred. Now, as the four of us go through our parents things and choose items we want to keep, I am dumbstruck at the idea that those precious things, kept together and under tight supervision all these years will now go to four different homes. Ill likely never again see our first family bible, the colorful pages that bring back a flood of childhood memories. Ill never examine the other three baby books again. They will live somewhere else now, each with a new memory keeper. I am overwhelmed with sadness at the finality of it all.
