My people fed me over the last couple days; Today while writing I munched on turkey meatball bagel sandwich, chocolate, Blueberry pomegranate juice with perrier, chips and edemame dip, my new favorite Marcona almonds (thank you Jumana and Joel. Yesterday I dined on homegrown pickles, apples, applesauce. grapes off the vine, local yogurt and my honey, real chitlins from homegrown pig, applesauce cake from locally ground wheat, homegrown and rendered lard and apples from the tree on the edge of one acre farm courtesy of Stella Jane. Together we processed the turkey killed in the Applegate moments before I arrived on the scene. The driver who hit it and I gathered it from the road and within 20 minutes it was on ice from Brooke and Petes where they fed me beautiful zucchini grilled in the open air on the edge of the Applegate River. I just chugged the fresh wellwater they gave me which is some of the sweetest water Ive ever guzzled. Stella Jane and I processed the bird and when we opened his crop discovered it full of snipped grain heads, chunks of apple, berries and ditchweed. It looked prestuffed and I took note for an ideal recipe for stuffing! We sectioned the beautiful bird and Stella showed me how to cut through the limbs, whip the razor, palm the feathers, process the innnards. We toured the rabbit hutch and discussed genetics for meat, treated the roosters I carried from town, checked for mites and greased legs. I learned to recognize conditions of skin, feathers and nostrils. We dissected the birds entrails, stomach lining and intestine, noting environmental effects and trimmed the meat off of the savable feather clusters which I brought home and cooked up for Bandicoot- who now loves me with great devotion once again. I have a beautiful wing drying on my roof, borax, pins and cardboard and I am recognizing the honor of receiving this tool, this offering from Turkey- the giveaway bird. These are so sturdy they used to use them to sweep the hearth! Stella crowed. When I got home, Jumana and I conceptualized feather wands for the beekeeping Melissae as a special and sensitive tool for moving bees and I am going to make barrettes out of some, to wear in my hair. These feathers will remind me that I am fed by my community! Thank you! Thank you! i will wear the feathers to walk in Thanksgiving for community! I will wear them to honor our animal brothers and sisters who give themselves for our food and to remind myself of the epic connection and power of learning these things, these skills and these relations. Thank you sweet friends, sisters and brothers of the same Mother! Thank you for this reminder of how we walk the Land. You feed me, I am emboldened by your nurturing, restored and inspired. Thank you may I soon hold a feast in your honor!
