My prayer for the day: O GOD, the news is getting tragic again: Children gassed in Syria, war in Egypt, anguish in what we consider holy lands. Not that things got necessarily worse the past week — the ongoing tragedies of the world just managed to break through the usual atmosphere of nonchalance on our so-called “news” channels. It does sometimes break through the happy talk and the constant yammering that drowns out the messes we in this country are making with your gifts. The rest of the world does sometimes manage to get our attention despite our best attempts to ignore it. May we have ears to hear and eyes to see what is really important — and learn to change the channel, and call or write the station, when what we see and hear insults our intelligence. We have the best technology in the world for seeing things as they are. Forgive us for wasting it. O GOD, we need no technology to see whatever visions you have for us. We do need imagination. And a little quiet sometimes. We do need to be tuned in to you — which means we need to be tuned in to others. Are we? O, GOD, open our eyes that we may see. Open our hearts to others, for thee. Show us, O GOD, what’s next. O, God, you know better than we the needs of those around us: those who are in trouble, those who are exhausted, those who are in sorrow, those whose lives are ebbing away, those who are without friends, those who are forgotten by the world. May we see them and reach out to them in Your name, even as we entrust them to Your care. Amen.
