My pre breakfast, pre workout drink this morning comprised of juiced beetroot, carrots, celery, apples and ginger. ~Beetroot has been shown to help the body respond better to exercise by balancing the use of oxygen and increasing stamina, this entails the dilation effect of the natural nitrates (including nitric oxide) on blood vessels. ~Apples are a good source of vitamin C, flavanoids, polyphenols, all to say that it is a great detoxifier. It also helps improve digestion via malice acid one of the substances found in it. ~Carrots are rich in antioxidants as are the beets and helps in maintaining healthy skin, positive effect on blood pressure; high in vitamin A which is essential for tissue growth and maintaining good vision. Now remember too much is also negative causing hypervitaminosis. Carrots are also an excellent source of Vitamin C good for maintaining the integrity of mucus membranes and healing wounds etc. ~Celery too is high in Vitamin A and an excellent source of the B vitamins (my favorite vitamins), Vitamin C, potassium, folate, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, sodium and tons of amino acids. It is great to drink juiced celery after a workout as it is loaded with electrolytes that can help replace those lost during exercise. ~Ginger is one of favorite roots...I can put it in just about anything..and do. It is great at combating inflammation. Folks who know me, know that the minute my throat feels in any way scratchy as if a cold incoming on, I make some ginger tea and it works! All of these have so many other uses and benefits that would make for a long text. **Beware, if you drink beetroot your urine and stool can appear red, this is because of the carotenes...please do not go to the ED with blood in your stool, unless of course, you have blood in your stool. Have a fun filled, healthy day! Dr. Leslie
