My profile photo shows Caleb Everett as he looked during part of the time we lived in the house in the cover photo. (Me too, of course, but I havent changed at all.) I really have no words to say over and over again as I reflect on this, what a privilege it was to raise Shannon Lee Everett Russell, Kris Diggins, and Caleb Everett among the Pirahas. I sometimes wonder why they even speak to me for all the things they went through. But they assure me that in spite of meningitis, typhoid, hepatitis, malaria, amebic dysentery, threats on our lives, falls, cuts, isolation, snakes, spiders, no contact with people that looked like us or talked like us for months at a time, in spite of no presents, three changes of clothes, and me and their mother for teachers (I was awful!), they seem to have good memories. All those nights reading by kerosene lamp (my favorite was To Kill a Mockingbird), spending Sundays on beaches swimming in the Maici, eating canned meat sandwiches on homemade bread, with rare (!) cans of guarana soda raise up within me a gratitude for life that I earned and yet feel at times that was given to me magically.
