My room with a view here looks out onto a building site. Oh well, you cant win em all. In spite of it being New Years Day the guys were grafting before 8am. The scaffolding is just lengths of bamboo lashed together and there dont appear to be any regs whatsoever about hard hats. I went on a boat trip this morning - cos thats exactly what you need a few hours after a New Year party and drinks :-) This involved going out of Siem Reap to the Tonie Sap lake and sailing down through the floating villages. These are self-contained communities with not just houses but shops, cafes, churches, health clinics and even pig farms. Apparently 7,000 people live here. This afternoon I wandered the markets rubbing shoulders with the locals. Well, not exactly rubbing shoulders as they are about half my size :-) Oh yeah, I forgot - I sat at the back on the boat earlier and this young lad walks straight up and climbed over the back rail, stood behind me and proceeded to pummel my back. It was supposed to be a massage but initially felt like he was beating me up and it took all my self - restraint not to twat him into the propeller. Anyway, no damage was done in the end to either him or me and I even gave him a dollar for his trouble (or was it to make him stop - I cant remember). During my expedition to the markets I negotiated a deal on t shirts and spent the princely amount of 3 US dollars for 2 ts. Other items for sale in the markets were real (but very dead) crocodiles (minus their innards) into which they had replaced the eyes with cheap beady ones. There was also some snake wine - complete with snake. In the evening I went for a farewell meal at a Khmer restaurant and ate on the balcony with a good view of the dance performance which they had put on. And so the holiday draws to an end. Ill be starting the long haul back in a few hours but looking forward to some family hugs. Thus ends my last (and long) report from Indo China :-)X
