My son asked where the word yield came from. Well, you wouldnt believe. You see, yield is connected by related words through an old Anglian word, geldan (to pay) to such words as golden, guilder, guild, guile (and then to wile), and guilt! Apparently in the old tongue the G (which, after all, only scholars would have known about) was either silent or only gently pronounced. This is why my Dad used to tell me to Look it up!
