My son, in whom i am well pleased , turns 37 today...well i think so, he was born in 1977. I can remember awaking to his mama telling me she was in labor, calling he doctor, the final packing to start the trip to the hospital, getting Rebecca up (Annes BFF ) and heading towards the Regional Hospital in Anniston, Alabama. I was driving a silver ford Granada, we drove slowly towards town and then realized we needed to make it more fun on the way so we drove fast with the light blinking up and down the main drag a couple times through Anniston and finally checked into the maternity area. I was ready, had my sack of quarters for the phone and was ready for all things. I was running a Radio Shack store in Oxford, Alabama then, my brother Jim worked for me and i called him at the store and told him to proceed and tell NO ONE. But things sort of got out of hand after that. The labor process extended, my unborn son Crutcher, was taking his time. Maybe he was busy or just needed his space. For what ever reason, Anne was in labor 46 hours at the hospital. And when phones did not get answered at home the relatives got word of the process and decided it was time to head to Anniston. So all my brothers and their wives/girlfriends and i had 5 brother still living then showed up, my mother and father showed and maybe even my grand father Pap and grand mother Robbie were there, and on Annes side were her mother, sister, brother and grandmother. And of course Rebecca was along for the ride and the small waiting area quickly filled up but it was already busy and full. During those 46 hours 17 babies were born and families came and went, things were different then and when the moms went behind the doors, fathers were not allowed to witness the action. 17 times nurses holding babies announced births and 17 times we were found still waiting. Finally he showed, he had 10 fingers, 10 toes and a pointy head. The head rounded out pretty good over the next few weeks. The families when home, i finally went home to get some rest and there with Pringle Teeter (our cocker spaniel ) and filled with awe, could not sleep so i turned on my recorder and talked to the dog about life, love and family. Somewhere, those tapes are still around. I can remember i was drink a fine bottle of scotch...on the rock with a splash. I was 27 years old, and living the American dream. The next morning i woke up, showered and got ready to head back to the hospital and when i walked outside, a neighbor was standing outside asking me what i was going to do about the crickets in my yard. I lived in a tiered sub division at the base of Mount Cheaha in Talladega County Alabama, mole crickets had started at the top of the hill and were slowly working their way down the hill eating everything it site and this idiot thought i owned it to him to kill them all so his yard would be spared. I told him, those are not my crickets those are our crickets and they are eating my grass and im not going to have mow, if you want to kill them, sounds good to me, just stay out of my yard. I got in my car, turned on the cassette player and turned up the volume and listened to LOGGINS & MESSINAs on my way to see the boy again. He had a great childhood and we were soon impressed with some of the things he did, he was slow to walk but after learning a couple words, he began speaking in sentences and phrases...Daddy i want to ride it... was one of the first. It was clear from the beginning he was a special kid, with special skills and with that came and interesting childhood who became a man in a childs body, early reasoning and logic. Once he learned to read, he never put down books. I dont know anyone as well read as him. For Christmas when he was 12, i gave him college text books on genetics. He wanted to clone teeth. Today he works at Google, has been there about 10 years and lives in San Francisco and i think was used as a mode for the Big Bang Theorys Sheldon Cooper. I love my boy ... there is not another him in the universe.
