My thought for the day; ‘Above the Law’ Has the United - TopicsExpress

My thought for the day; ‘Above the Law’ Has the United States become a nation of delinquents being raised by enabling parents? We seem to have forgotten that every action has a reaction. What happens when you bail your kids out of trouble every time they make a bad choice and fail to teach them that every person is accountable for their own actions? Eventually they learn they can do whatever they want without repercussion; they grow to internalize it as a license to do whatever they damn well please. When our leaders determined that torture was acceptable it opened up the floodgates for our enemies to retaliate in kind. How odd that we would forget the lessons learned from history; that we, a nation that led the parade to prosecute the Nazi war criminals would, in turn, become criminals ourselves. If those responsible for these atrocities are never brought to justice; then we, as a nation, have condoned their behavior and become willing accessories to their crimes by enabling such actions; we will in turn bear the consequences of our actions. The same holds true for the dilemma we now face with our police forces. Our officers (guilty or not) are now becoming targets of retaliation because of those officers who have set themselves above the law, becoming instead judge, jury and executioner by virtue of the power they hold in their hands. When the law is suspended because of a person’s position we cannot hope to stem the tide of future abuses of power – which will in turn endanger all others who hold similar positions. Either all citizens are held accountable to the law or we devolve into a nation where lawlessness becomes license. We cannot escape the consequences of our actions merely by turning a blind eye to justice. We will reap what we sow – regardless of our intentions. Brutality merely escalates when allowed to be seen as a solution to our problems. It never solves a thing. Before long the blame becomes reciprocal.
