My thought for the evening: If the forces of ignorance had their way, Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, one of my greatest personal heroes, would spend his life in servitude harvesting produce for Southern gentility. If the forces of ignorance had their way, Dr. Carl Sagan would have been exiled to a ghetto and slaughtered in a pogrom. If the forces of ignorance had their way, Dr. Alan Turing would have been jailed for sodomy instead of cracking the Enigma code. When we allow the forces of ignorance to control our lands, we waste the best and brightest of our human potential. The last example was misleading. Following World War II, Dr. Turing died at his own hands after conviction, shaming, and forced chemical castration in lieu of prison. His work in cracking the German Enigma ciphers was instrumental in the Allied Victory. Prime Minister Gordon Browne issued a formal apology to Dr. Turing in 2009. These dark chapters are often too recent for comfort. Ensuring that they remain relics of the past is our duty to our nation, world, and children.
