My thoughts exactly.... Via Yasir Qadhi I admire the Saudi cleric Sh. Salman al-Oadahs efforts in making a concerted effort to make Islam more relevant to the people. In a society where some scholars are not addressing the social ills rampant in their own culture, and concentrating on ancient issues of little relevance to their community or even the world at large, Sh. Salman has done a great job of trying to make our religion and its scholarship accessible and meaningful to the average person of his society. He has recently started a series of of professionally produced video clips addressing modern problems in his society. His latest one is about the blatant racism that everyone who has ever lived in those lands is so painfully aware of (all of us who have lived there can speak to the inherent arrogance rampant in those societies). This turn that Sh. Salman has taken has, of course, gotten him into a lot of trouble with other clerics who refuse to understand the changing dynamics of their societies, and are content to simply pass down a tradition that they themselves were taught a century ago, believe that tradition to be divine and etched in stone. But it is scholars like Sh. Salman that I take as my role models in my own endeavors in the West (and no doubt, every human has his mistakes and this is not a blanket endorsement of every fatwa he has ever given!).
