My thoughts on Flexibility vs. Mobility? I typically think of flexibility as a quantitative measurement of the elasticity of the musculature and all of the connective tissue throughout a particular range of motion. How is this different from mobility? Well, I think of mobility as the ability to achieve and sustain a specific position, meaning there is an element of fundamental strength involved. Ive seen people who are relatively flexible (can touch their toes, score well on a sit-and-reach test, etc.) struggle to achieve a good bottom position in their lifts. I believe that, in weightlifting, there is a minimal threshold of fundamental strength that an individual must possess in order to properly move through certain ranges of motion. This is why, in addition to stretching, mobility exercises must be done to STRENGTHEN these positions. Heres an example of an exercise that I use to strengthen the bottom position of my snatch. The engagement of the thoracic spine and shoulder girdle is unlike anything I can do standing straight up. It forces me to get comfortable in a very uncomfortable position. As Ive always said, this is a crucial element of weightlifting. #thirteenthstrong #science #weightlifting #crossfit #mobility #letsgetstrongtogether
