My two amendments were included in the bipartisan defense funding bill that just passed the House. These amendments would prevent military commissaries from being closed and would prohibit funds from being used for recreational facilities for detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (like the $750,000 soccer field in 2012). Our Veterans have offered to place their lives on the line for our freedom. They have earned their benefits – whether it’s Tricare, Cost-of-Living Adjustments, or whether it’s commissaries. We can’t throw around as a bargaining chip the benefits of those who have sacrificed everything. We are in debt. The money we spend should be for cancer research; not on making life more pleasant for terrorists held at our prisons.
