My wife, Sandie, and i spent a very pleasant day near the beautiful waterfront of St. Petersburg, Florida. First we toured a display of art works by Picasso and Dali at the newly designed Salvador Dali Museum. There was a presentation regarding the friendship and interaction of these Spanish artistic giants. Then we went on a docent led tour of Dali works. After we had a delicious lunch at the Dali, we got a chance to look out at the beautiful water dotted with white sail boats. Afterwards, we were treated to a full scale performance of Carmina Burana presented by the Florida symphony complete with tenor, baritone, and soprano soloists, a childrens choir, and a terrific choral. There was a discussion by the guest conductor from Seattle. I was surprised to find that this masterwork by Orff was based on 13th century poems depicting life at that time. Much was focused on spring time and romantic love. Preliminary works included Schubert and Debussy. Anyone looking for a great place for a vacation should plan on an itinerary including the artistic merits of St. Petersburg and Tampa. By the way, the beaches and restaurants are great.
