#Myanmar: your past will be privatized and your history will be commercialized - in the interests of the generals and the cronies. The Secretariat (or Wun-gyi-mya Yone) in Rangoon, possibly the most elegant and largest colonial architectural gems in Burma - and the whole of Southeast Asia - is one of the most historically and politically significant buildings in the modern history of the country we call today Myanmar. This was the nerve center of the British colonial administration. This was the target site of various radical nationalist protests including the 1920 and 1938 university and labor strikes. This was also the site where Aung San and his multi-ethnic and multi-faith cabinet colleagues and their 2 personal staffers on 19 July 1947. That was also the seat of Ne Wins vast intelligence network called National Intelligence Bureau and various line ministries until Ne Wins authoritarian empire collapsed in July 1988. Now it has been privatized - and public is barred from visiting the place.
