Myself and Jason Emanuelson are the owners of Alert Driving Academy on East Main st, in Webster. We have been on East Main St. For 6 years. Every week either Jason or myself fill a trash bag with trash from the sidewalk and yard. We dont complain about it or ask for praise. The trash is all McDonalds containers and bags, Cigarette packs, and bottles of all sorts etc. We have been contacted by both police officers and now Selectmen, stating that we need to provide outdoor trash receptacles because they believe the trash is caused by our students. This is not the case!! We hold only one class a month for 5 days, and clean the yard every day that we are there. .The trash problem is cause by people walking from McDonalds, people that live in the neighborhood, or the 3 bus stops that stop there everyday. I dont think it is our responsibility as a business owner to provide trash cans for people walking by to use, nor pay for the extra trash removal. Since buying the building in February we have spent over $10,000 on landscaping painting and sign improvements to make our little area of town nicer. I feel if the town feels there is a trash problem, the town should provide trash cans on Main St as they used to. Not expect the business owners to foot the bill! Not only have we spent thousands on improvements, but we also donate thousands to local charitys, including police and fire. We do all that we can to try and make a difference but this is asking too much.
