Myth 5: Once a PTSD survivor recovers, they are healed. Healing - TopicsExpress

Myth 5: Once a PTSD survivor recovers, they are healed. Healing comes in many ways for a PTSD survivor, but recovery does not mean that everything is all better. Most ailments have a treatment program that attacks the virus or cause, and the symptoms go away. This, however, is not the case with PTSD. The healing comes in the form of management techniques to help manage the stresses being faced, but there are times when even those management techniques fail. Anxiety, which is a symptom of PTSD, can be treated with medication, but does not help when the stresses become unmanageable. A trigger could be set off without warning that brings all of that back to the survivor. Whether it is a smell, sound, or sight, the smallest thing can trample over the progress made without warning. For a PTSD survivor to truly be healed, they would have to have no residual side effects post treatment. It could take a person years or decades of treatment based on the severity of the traumatic event.
