The Kenya Revenue Authority has arrested several managers of leading supermarkets for flouting the new Value Added Tax Act. Three managers from Naivas, Tuskys and A1 supermarkets in Mombasa were charged with exploiting customers through taxing basic commodities that were exempted from the new Act. Simon Mwabingu, George Ouma and Yornah Mando were yesterday charged with issuing tax invoices for non taxable supplies contrary to section 42 (2) of the Kenyan constitution. The three denied the charges before Mombasa’s chief magistrate Stephen Riech. Mwabingu and Mando were released on Sh50,000 cash bail each while Ouma was released on Sh100,000 cash bail. The case will be heard on October 1. The move by KRA was directed by President Uhuru Kenyatta after holding a meeting. He called for the prosecution of unscrupulous traders who have hiked prices of basic commodities. Under the new Act, processed products attract 16 per cent VAT which has led to an increase in the cost of production by manufacturers. The legislation saw milk and bread prices skyrocket. The high cost of goods caused uproar among Kenyans prompting Uhuru to take action. He directed that KRA acts immediately. In a letter sent to the press last week, the KRA said no customer should be overcharged when buying milk. KRA commissioner general John Njiraini said milk and bread were exempted from taxation and do not not attract the VAT levied. Top supermarket managers arrested for taxing bread and milk
