NASA Robot Crashes Into Moon While NASA does not yet know the precise location, its LADEE robotic moon explorer has successfully crashed into the back side of the moon—just as NASA intended. Traveling at 5,800 kpm, the team believes it likely vaporized immediately upon impact. LADEE, which stands for Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer, was launched in September 2013 to accumulate data on the lunar atmosphere.
