NASARAWA WILL RESIST ILLEGAL REMOVAL OF AL-MAKURA – GOVT Written by Hir Joseph, Lafia Daily Trust The government of Nasarawa State today vowed that the people will resist any attempt by members of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly (NSHA) to remove Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura through unconstitutional and forceful means. “The resort of the House of Assembly to unconstitutionality and illegality to forcefully remove from office, the amiable and development-oriented governor of Nasarawa State will be strongly resisted by the good people of Nasarawa State,” Abdulhamid Kwarra, the governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs told newsmen yesterday. Kwarra spoke in reaction to yesterday’s sitting by members, who moved a motion directing the state Chief Judge, Justice Sulaiman Dikko to constitute a committee to probe the 16-count charges contained in the impeachment notice the members passed on July 14. Kwarra said the administration believes and upholds the principle of the Rule of Law and Due Process, but insisted that the government will only respond to the allegations raised by the House only when the members adhere to the provisions of the constitution and due process. “Regrettably, however, actions of the State House of Assembly in the past one week are not suspect, premeditated, but a clear contravention of the provisions of the 1999 Constitution,” he said, vowing the people will resist any forceful removal of the governor. He said the state government’s position on the matter remains that up to yesterday, the House had not served the governor with the impeachment notice as required by law, adding that publishing the notice in the media does not amount to substituted service since only the court can grant such relief to do so. “As a legislative institution, the House cannot arrogate to itself any judicial power,” Kwarra said. He therefore, appealed to the state Chief Judge to ensure that due process is followed as enshrined in the constitution in the discharge of his duties.
