NATIONAL FIELD DIRECTOR United States Student Association The United States Student Association, the country’s oldest and largest national student-led organization, develops current and future leaders and amplifies the student voice at the local, state, and national levels by mobilizing grassroots power to win concrete victories on student issues. United States Student Association Foundation The United States Student Association Foundation ensures the pipeline of effective student leadership by facilitating education, training and other development opportunities at national, state and local levels in advocating for issues that affect students. Field Department The Field Department led by the National Field Director is the organizing arm of USSA/F. It is currently comprised of the national field director and 4 national field associates, also working very closely with the other departments in USSA and joint projects with Jobs with Justice. The field department works to implement USSA/Fs programs and campaigns in USSA member campuses, while helping to expand and strengthen USSA’s membership base. The purpose of the department is to build power for students through running campaigns on issues that impact students’ lives while developing student leaders and building strong student organizations at the local, state, and national level. The National Field Director will be charged with implementing strategy around USSA’s current initiatives and assist with the recruitment and implementation of USSA’s annual national conferences. The National Field Director works with student leaders across the country in a variety of roles but always with the end goal of make USSA a stronger association and helping students understand their power in their everyday lives. Responsibilities • Develop USSA campaign plans and organizing materials for national campaigns, which include, but are not limited to, toolkits and manuals, etc. • Plan and implement campaign for stronger membership and recruitment • Manage the overall implementation of USSA organizing programs in the field • Work with the SLAP (Student Labor Action Project) on USSA national campaigns and actions. • Serve on the student debt campaign steering committee with the Student Debt Coordinator. • Develop USSA organizing resources for State & System Student Associations and campus members. • Develop campaign and recruitment tracking systems • Manage communications and media outreach, which includes, but is not limited to email action alerts, social media, etc. with the USSA Legislative Director • Train students with the help of the Regional Field Associates in grassroots organizing and electoral organizing principles and skills. • Work with the Trainings Director to adjust and create new trainings for leadership development purposes. • Collaborate in planning, recruiting for, and staffing two annual USSA conferences and other USSA sponsored trainings. • Guide the collaboration with partner youth organizations and coalition partners under the Generational Alliance • Promote the department, USSA, and USSAF at conferences, coalition meetings, mailings, and through day-to-day contact with students and other non-profit organizations. • Carry out all other directives given by the officers and the board of directors. Preferred Experience • Understanding of Direct Action Organizing. • Grassroots campaign experience through campus or community campaigns. • Understanding of the USSA organizational structure. • Experience planning and running an Electoral Campaign on campus or in community. • Training experience, especially peer-to-peer training. • Experience managing and training staff and or volunteers • Student, student government, state wide system associations and/or community organizing experience. • Experience organizing in/with student of color communities. • Electoral Organizing experience. • Experience in Coalition development. • Participation in GROW, EAT or Midwest Academy training a plus. • Experience working with USSA, a state or system student association, or higher education access issues. • Excellent written and oral communication skills. • Self-motivated, outgoing, detailed-oriented. • Willingness to work evening, weekends and travel.
