NC, Congress to contest RS polls jointly SRINAGAR, JAN 27:---Former alliance partners National Conference and Congress have decided to join hands for the elections to the upper house of the Indian parliament. Former JK chief minister and National Conference working president Omar Abdullah has reached New Delhi to met Congress President Sonia Gandhi and AICC vice president Rahul Gandhi, sources said. Reliable sources in the National Conference said Omar air-dashed to New Delhi on Tuesday afternoon and is scheduled to meet Sonia and Rahul in the evening to discuss possibilities of utilizing NC’s 15 votes and 12 of Congress and also the three crucial votes of independent candidates. Omar confirmed that he is meeting Sonia and Rahul. “I am meeting them in the evening to discuss the strategy for Raj Sabha polls,” he said. Sources said leaders of both parties were in talks with each other from a couple of days and have reached to an understanding to contest jointly the polls scheduled on February 7. Meanwhile, sources said that NC has finalized names Sajad Ahmad Kichloo and Nasir Aslam Wani as NC candidates for the polls. Insiders in the NC said that both the candidates will submit their documents Wednesday. “The names were finalized by the party last night,” one of the NC leader said. Both Wani and Kichloo lost the recent Assembly elections. Meanwhile, insiders in NC and Congress said both the parties have approached independent candidates to seek their support. If sources are to be believed some of them have agreed to extend their support. Sources said that PDP-BJP will face tough contest as NC and Congress have decided to contest jointly. Meanwhile, Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad reached Jammu on Tuesday. “Soon after he met CPI State Secretary Mohammad Yosuf Tarigami and PDF chief Hakeem Yaseen to seek their support,” sources said. When contacted Tarigami said he met Azad in Jammu. “I can tell you that instead of supporting BJP I will prefer to support Azad,” he said. Prof Soz, the chief of the Congress in the state, said they have finalized the name of Azad and he will fill his nomination on Wednesday. “We called a meeting of our MLAs in Jammu on Wednesday where it was decided,” he said.
