NCAA to suspend Texas guard Myck Kabongo for season December 20, 2012 – 12:46 am by Ryan Phillips Myck Kabongo Well, it took a few months for us to find out, but now we know that Texas Longhorns guard Myck Kabongo will be suspended by the NCAA for the rest of the 2012-13 college basketball season. According to Yahoo! Sports, the NCAA’s investigation of the potential NBA first-round pick centered around possible impermissible benefits from agent Rich Paul. Paul represents LeBron James and former Texas players Tristan Thompson and Cory Joseph. While the NCAA typically suspends players between three and 10 games while ordering them to repay benefits received, this case was different. The organization determined that Kabongo misled investigators by providing inaccurate information. The same type of season-long ban was applied to former Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant in 2009, when he lied to the NCAA. Kabongo was going to be a huge part of Texas’ team this year. He averaged 9.6 points, 5.2 assists and 1.3 steals as a freshman last season and without him the Longhorns have limped to a 6-4 start. The former McDonald’s All-American played high school basketball with Thompson. That might be how he became connected with Paul. The investigation reportedly center around Kabongo traveling to Cleveland last spring on a trip that included a workout with trainer Jerry Powell. The issue was who paid for Kabongo’s travel and whether or not Powell provided his training services were provided without cost. Powell has said that Paul was not present at the workout with Kabongo, but he was present at another workout with Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. After Kabongo’s freshman season, Paul called NBA contacts to gauge whether or not the point guard would be picked in the NBA Draft. He has expected to be one of the nation’s top point guards this season. Now that Kabongo hasn’t been on the court in so long, his prospects for the 2013 NBA Draft are looking grim. Kabongo is a nice player but sitting out for a long time is not going to get scouts drooling about his potential. - See more at: rumorsandrants/2012/12/ncaa-to-suspend-texas-guard-myck-kabongo-for-season.html#sthash.QUA1k78E.dpuf
