NCOESC AND FAMILY LEARNING CENTER OFFER FREE WORKSHOP ABOUT OPEN ENROLLMENT FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS The North Central Ohio Educational Service Center (NCOESC), in concert with the Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities and the Family Learning Center, are offering a free workshop focusing on open enrollment issues, according to Jim Lahoski, PhD, Superintendent/CEO of NCOESC. The workshop will be held Saturday, October 25th from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the North Central Ohio Educational Service Center, 928 W. Market Street, Tiffin. “The Family Learning Center was established to provide a preschool education to both children with special needs and typically developing children,” Dr. Lahoski stated. “We have the capacity to welcome as many as a hundred new students during the 2015-16 school year. This workshop will provide detailed information on open enrollment to inform parents about the opportunities that still exist for their children to attend the Family Learning Center. The NCOESC believe parents should have an opportunity to choose the program that best fits their child’s needs.” In the past few months, the Tiffin City School District has indicated it will re-construct and remodel Lincoln Elementary School to create the Lincoln Pre-K building. “Tiffin thought that would allow them to move as many as 60 preschool students from the Family Learning Center to the Lincoln Pre-K,” said Dr. Lahoski. “However, the Tiffin Board and Administration did not realize that parents have the legal choice to keep their children at the Family Learning Center.” “Parents can explore different enrollment options if there is not a solution for their child which satisfies their needs,” said Dr. Lahoski. “Students can attend school in a district where their parents are not residents. Every school district in Ohio decides whether to allow open enrollment. It is allowed in Seneca County by all the school districts,” he added. “With the potential opening of another preschool for children with special needs, it is important to underscore the benefits and tremendous value of the Family Learning Center as the caring, well-equipped and expertly staffed educational facility that it is and has always been,” Lahoski emphasized. “Over 20 years ago, the NCOESC Family Learning Center at Sentinel was established as a collaborative project of the Seneca County schools and public agencies,” said Lahoski. “The Family Learning Center strives to provide comprehensive medical, educational, social and mental health support to both children and their families. It is designed to empower families and ensure that preschool children will start school ready to learn.” Reservations for the free workshop can be made by calling Stephanie Brown at 419.447.2927 or writing [email protected] .
