NEW EVENT!!! KEYSTONE HALL & NHTIAD Present: PAIN AND ADDICTION: CHALLENGES AND CONTROVERSIES with Mel Pohl, M.D. A 6 HOUR TRAINING EVENT WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16 , 2013 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (registration begins at 8:00 a.m.) at NHHEAF, 4 Barrell Court (Bldg 3), Concord, NH DESCRIPTION OF THE PRESENTATION: Chronic pain occurs as a complicated web of emotions and physical symptoms. The most common way to treat pain is to use opioid medications which actually complicate the course of chronic pain. For some who develop addiction matters become much worse. This session will review the interactions of pain, suffering and addiction as they interface in your clients and their families with suggestions for intervention and treatment. Goals: 1. Review fundamentals of the neurobiology of acute and chronic pain and suffering. 2. Review rationale for prescribing of medications for chronic pain including non-opioid’s and opioid’s. 3. Explore non-pharmacologic treatments for chronic pain including mindfulness training, physical modalities and cognitive behavioral interventions. 4. Describe the nature of codependency and emotional responses as they affect families LADC Performance Domains: I-V Categories of Competence: 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 12- 16, 18 CPS Educational Discipline: ATOD ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Mel Pohl, MD, FASAM is a Board Certified Family Practitioner. He is Vice President of Medical Affairs and the Medical Director of Las Vegas Recovery Center (LVRC). Dr. Pohl was a major force in developing LVRC’s Chronic Pain Rehabilitation Program. He is certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine, certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM), and a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). He is the former chairman of ASAM’s AIDS Committee, a member of the Symposium Planning Committee, a member of the planning committee for ASAM’s Annual “Common Threads, Pain and Addiction” Course and co-chair of ASAM’s Pain and Addiction Workgroup. Dr. Pohl is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice and a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. He was elected by his peers for inclusion in Best Doctors in America® from 2009 to 2011. He is a nationally known public speaker and co-author.
