NEW FIGURES SHOW FOLLY OF WESTMINSTER’S EURO-HOSTILE AGENDA REPORT SHOWS WHY SCOTLAND NEEDS OWN VOICE IN EUROPE New figures reported today highlighting the huge economic contribution made to the UK by EU migrants confirms the folly of Westminster’s Euro-hostile agenda – and shows why Scotland needs to have its voice heard on EU matters. The study by University College London has found that EU migrants contributed more than £20bn to the economy between 2001 and 2011 – and that workers from EU15 countries such as France and Germany paid 64 per cent more in tax than they received in benefits, while migrants from newer accession states paid 12 per cent more than they received. The analysis states that new restrictions on immigration planned by David Cameron would deter highly educated young people from Europe from working in Britain – costing the economy dear and showing why Scotland needs powers Commenting, SNP MSP Christina McKelvie said: “People in Scotland want to see us play a positive role in the EU and be a welcoming, inclusive place for people to come to work– and these new figures show the key role EU migrants play in our economy. “Despite attempts by the Tories to demonise economic migrants – and the race to the right amongst all the Westminster parties on immigration – it’s abundantly clear that migrants make an important contribution to our economy and our country. “These figures simply show that Westminster’s willingness to allow UKIP to dictate policy on immigration would be hugely damaging for our economy.
