NEW PETITION~ Washington State Transportation Commission: Name the new ferry Blackfish. The Washington State Transportation Commission has asked for help in naming the new 144-car ferry that is currently under construction. Since most of the ferries currently in service have tribal names and because the orca is a major symbol in Northwest culture, it only seems fitting that the new ferry be named after the Native American word for orca, Blackfish. In Washington, we have 3 pods of resident killer whales as well as groups of transients that pass through from time to time. In fact, these animals are frequently seen from various ferry lanes. However, these intelligent and majestic creatures are also in danger due to a shortage of their main food supply, chinook salmon. By naming the ferry Blackfish, we will not only be recognizing our culture and a beautiful animal that also calls this place home, but also help to raise awareness about their current status listing as endangered.
