NEW ZEALAND - Remember the last one? - My socks blew off the washing line Civil Defence is warning people to prepare for stormy weather this weekend as a tropical cyclone heads towards New Zealand. The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management says it is monitoring Tropical Cyclone Lusi alongside MetService as it moves from Vanuatu, past Fiji to New Zealand. Lusi is expected to arrive over northern New Zealand on Saturday or early Sunday. It is then set to track southwards over central New Zealand before moving out to sea east of the South Island on Monday. Severe weather is likely to affect many regions around the country during this event, the ministry warned, especially over the weekend from Northland down to Canterbury. Cyclone Lusi is expected to transition into a sub-tropical weather system as it approaches New Zealand, but it is still expected to be a dangerous storm, the ministry said. MetService has issued a weather watch for the likelihood of heavy rain exceeding warning criteria in Northland, Auckland and about the Coromandel Peninsula late Friday or Saturday. MetService is warning the remainder of the North Island and upper South Island to expect a period of heavy rain during the weekend, especially in regions exposed to the east and northeast. Easterly gales are likely in most places, and the risk of these becoming severe is highest in the lee of ranges, such as the Kaimais.
