NEWS June 07 to 16, 2014 KONE PROVIDING 24 UNITS FOR LONDON BRIDGE STATION KONE has been selected to provide and install 24 TransitMaster® 140 escalators for the London Bridge rail station upgrade, scheduled for completion in 2018. The fourth-busiest rail station in the U.K., London Bridge sees approximately 50 million passengers annually. Part of a comprehensive rail-network upgrade underway across the country, work at the London Bridge includes elevators, escalators and additional platforms to ease passenger flow. SCHINDLER 9600, SNAPCAB RECOGNIZED BY BUILDINGS BUILDINGS magazine recently selected the Schindler 9600 escalator modernization package and SnapCab’s elevator-interior upgrade system as “2014 Money-Saving Products,” joining ThyssenKrupp Elevator Americas’ endure MRL. The 9600, Schindler maintains, simplifies escalator modernization, allows for rapid installation and saves energy. SnapCab states its system offers an average of 30% cost savings versus a customized job. The monthly BUILDINGS publication reaches more than 74,000 building owners and professional facilities managers in North America. CHILEAN ELEVATOR MISHAP CAUGHT ON VIDEO A man was seriously injured in Santiago, Chile, when the elevator in which he was riding suddenly shot up 31 floors in 15 s., a scene captured on a security camera. Countless news agencies reported on the incident, which occurred on June 6. Video shows the man frantically pushing buttons as the elevator quickly ascends with its doors open, ultimately crashing into the building’s roof. The U.K. Daily Mail said the unit reached speeds of up to 49 mph. The man reportedly was hospitalized with head and leg injuries. The cause of the malfunction is not yet known. June 13, 2014 KONE RANKED WORLD’S 12TH GREENEST COMPANY KONE is the 12th greenest publicly traded company in the world, according to 2014 rankings provided by the U.S. magazine Newsweek. Rankings are based on eight metrics that measure overall corporate environmental performance. In addition to working with customers to achieve environmentally friendly solutions, KONE says it has reduced the carbon footprint of its own operations relative to net sales by 3.5%, compared with its 2012 figure. OTIS RECEIVES MANUFACTURING LEADERSHIP AWARD Otis received the Editors’ Choice Award at the 10th annual Manufacturing Leadership Awards gala in Palm Beach, Florida, in March. The OEM was recognized for its implementation of cloud computing, in partnership with Cisco and CGI, in an effort to “enable redundancy and consistency across [Otis] global footprint [and] provide a boundary-less solution that enables rapid deployment of scalable applications in a consistent and methodical manner globally in order to reduce operational costs, while increasing operational efficiency.” The awards were presented by the Manufacturing Leadership Community, a division of Frost & Sullivan. MAN-D-TEC HIRES FLAKE Man-D-Tec®, Inc. of Scottsdale, Arizona, has hired Tyler Flake as Fabrication lead. His duties include providing technical support, designing products and writing product manuals. Serving as a Man-D-Tec apprentice while earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Arizona State University, Flake has experience designing and engineering mini Baja trucks. June 12, 2014 WELCH RECEIVES APTA AWARD VTX® announced in June that Patrick J. Welch, its president, was recognized for his 10 years of service as chair of the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) Elevator Escalator Technical Forum (EETF). Welch received a certificate of appreciation and was named chair emeritus of the forum. He will continue to participate on the APTA EETF as chair of the forum’s design guideline efforts. He also will continue to serve on the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) A17.1 Escalator and Moving Walk Committee, where he has been an active member since 1996. ELEVATOR STUDY ON INDIA RELEASED Research & Publications India Pvt. Ltd. has released “The Future of Elevator Market in India to 2018: A Five Year Outlook,” which is currently available at elevatorbooks. This in-depth industry analysis updates a November 2011 study to provide a comprehensive analysis of the elevator market and detailed forecasts through 2018. It includes an overview of the industry; demand forecasts; key drivers and trends; new capacities/expansion; trends in the components, maintenance and modernization markets; technological aspects; profiles of select major players; and regulatory issues. While 26 cities were covered in the previous report, the current study focuses on 30 cities. ELEVATOR CONTROLS LAUNCHES NEW WEBSITE Elevator Controls Corp. has redesigned its website (elevatorcontrols) with a focus on making it customer centric. Customers can now contact technical support and access controller manuals, specifications, survey forms and more from the website. Information and support for each of the company’s control systems are also available. The company notes that the website will continue to improve and add new features to assist its customers. June 11, 2014 ESCALATORS TO EASE COMMUTE ON NEW PAKISTAN BUS LINE The Punjab Metro Bus Authority plans to install 200 escalators to ease commuter traffic on the new Islamabad Rawalpindi line in Pakistan, Pakistan Today reports. Scheduled to be up and running in 2015, the line is set to include up to 10 new stations in Rawalpindi and 14 in Islamabad, along with 60 new buses. JERSEY CITY PROJECTS CONTINUE FINE TUNING Plans for a pair of mixed-use projects that promise to continue the transformation of Jersey City, New Jersey, have been updated, New York YIMBY reports. The 60-story, City Center Towers in Journal Square (ELENET 594) are no longer linked by a skybridge. Design of the 61-story San Remo, which is closer to Manhattan, has had a complete overhaul and now boasts a sleek façade that promises to stand out in Jersey City. Construction dates for neither project have been announced. SIX RESCUED IN TOWER OF THE AMERICAS ELEVATOR MISHAP Six people were trapped for approximately 40 min. in a Tower of the Americas elevator in San Antonio on June 6, KENS Channel 5 reports. The elevator stopped near the restaurant level at approximately 9:40 p.m. Firefighters freed the passengers, none of whom were injured. The cause of the malfunction is unknown, although the three elevators in the 750-ft.-tall observation tower, built for the 1968 World’s Fair, have a history of breaking down. In 2013, passengers became trapped in at least three separate incidents. June 10, 2014 LAYTON NAMED EESF ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR The Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation (EESF) has named Nikole Layton associate director. She will manage all fundraising events, campaigns, grant writing and new initiatives. She has worked for Ronald McDonald House Charities® of the Coastal Empire and Chattanooga, Tennessee; the YMCA of Greater Beaufort County’s corporate office; Birmingham AIDS Outreach and Gurley and Company Public Relations and Marketing. She holds an MA in Communications from Jacksonville State University. She lives in Fairhope, Alabama, with her husband and son. D & D ELEVATOR ACQUIRES ARCO D & D Elevator Maintenance, Inc. of Elmsford, New York, has acquired Arco Elevator, a Bronx, New York-based maintenance, repair and modernization company founded in 1974. The acquisition is the latest move in growth strategy D & D implemented in 2011 and promises “to allow D & D to strengthen its level of service in areas where we already have a presence and lays the groundwork for future expansion in the tri-state area,” D & D President and CEO Bobby Schaeffer said. “Arco Elevator has a similar culture of customer-focused quality service, so we thought it would be a perfect fit for our company,” he added. ELEVATOR WORKER DIES FROM FALL AT QUEENS JOBSITE A 26-year-old elevator worker died on June 5 after he fell down an elevator shaft from the fifth to the first floor of the under-construction Sunnyside school in Queens, New York, where he and fellow workers were installing units, DNAinfo New York reports. The accident is under investigation, but preliminary results show the man’s safety harness was not connected to a lifeline. Another worker fell two stories, but his safety harness was connected to a lifeline and his injuries appeared to be non life threatening. June 9, 2014 NEW ELEVATOR WORLD BOARD MEMBERS Elevator World, Inc. is pleased to announce two new additions to its board of directors: Massimo Bezzi and Bobby Schaeffer. Bezzi has been chairman of I.C.M. s.r.l. in Trento, Italy, since 2008; vice president of the European Federation for Elevator Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises since 2008; and a member of the European Office of Crafts, Trades and Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises for Standardisation and ANACAM (Italian elevator association). Schaeffer is president of D & D Elevator Maintenance, Inc., and served on the National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC) Board of Directors for three years and as president of the organization in 2000. Additionally, 40-year industry veteran Richard Baxter has rejoined the Elevator World board. He was executive vice president and cofounder of Baxter & Sons Elevator Co., Inc. in Dallas, and was an Elevator World technical director for more than 20 years. He is an active member of NAEC and served as its president in 1984. KONE WINS ORDER FOR KINGDOM TOWER KONE has landed a contract to outfit the mixed-use Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, with 65 units, including the world’s fastest and highest double-deck elevators that exceed 10 mps and rise 660 m. Kingdom Tower is expected to be complete in 2018 and will be the world’s tallest building at more than 1 km. KONE plans to use its UltraRopeTM high-rise hoisting technology. The order consists of 21 MonoSpace®, 29 single- and seven double-deck MiniSpaceTM elevators, and eight TravelMasterTM 100 escalators. The system will include custom cabs and landing doors, Polaris destination dispatch, Infoscreen displays, E-LinkTM monitoring and emergency-evacuation capabilities. LYON TO GUIDE LERCH BATES’ GROWTH IN D.C. Lerch Bates Inc. has named Mike Lyon project manager, Elevator Consulting Group, overseeing the Washington, D.C., region. In his new role, Lyon will provide vertical-transportation consulting for projects throughout the area. Lyon’s 15-plus years of industry experience include New Equipment engineer for KONE in Washington, D.C., and account manager for Otis in Maryland. He has also worked as a salesperson for Eklund’s, Inc. and Elevator Modernization Co.
