NEWS ON SUNNEWS It was a weekend of double tragedy in Abia State, as armed robbers shot dead a member of Abia State Vigilance Services, AVS, popularly known as ‘Bakassi Boys’, in Aba. Another man got drowned while excavating sand. At about 2.30pm on Friday, armed robbers invaded No. 66, Item Road, at the Ngwa/Ohanku axis, and attacked the occupants of the building, whom they robbed of their cash and other valuables. And on breaking into one of the rooms and finding out that the occupant, one Israel Njoku, was a member of the ‘Bakassi Boys’, an eyewitness account said, the robbers shot him dead instantly. Njoku was said to have pleaded with the invaders to spare his life, a plea that reportedly fell on deaf ears, as the robbers believed that being a member of the AVS, their own lives would be in danger if they did otherwise.
