NEWS RELEASE DRUG OVERDOSE 14-13406 On Saturday, August 02, 2014 at approximately 5:31 pm, Germantown Police Officers responded to the Speedway Gas Station (W178N9653 Riversbend Lane) reference suspicious circumstances occurring in a bathroom. Store employees advised that an individual had been locked in the bathroom for an extended period of time and was currently making strange noises. Multiple officers arrived at the scene, gained entry to the bathroom, and immediately recognized this incident as a possible heroin overdose. A Germantown Police Officer administered Narcan to the male victim prior to arrival of Germantown Rescue. The victim eventually regained consciousness after being transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. According to Fire Chief Gary Weiss who was at the scene, this officer’s ability to administer Narcan to the victim saved this victim’s life. In mid-July, Germantown Police Officers were trained in the use of Narcan and now carry Narcan in their squads. This incident was the first time that a Germantown Officer administered Narcan while on duty. Unfortunately, during this incident, another Germantown Police Officer’s hand was accidentally pierced by a used hypodermic needle that the victim had in his possession. This officer transported himself to a local hospital for immediate medical treatment. The officer was admitted to the hospital and will be treated and evaluated for his injury. Our department is hopeful that this officer will not suffer any negative impact on his health as a result of this exposure. It is a common occurrence for police officers and emergency medical professionals to encounter needles and other sharp objects at incidents involving controlled substances. Officers can be exposed to potentially deadly diseases at these types of calls, and do their best to take proactive steps to avoid exposure. In this incident, the officer who was stuck by the needle was wearing gloves; however, the gloves failed to protect his hands. Respectfully, Lt. David Huesemann Chief Peter Hoell
