NEWS RELEASE July 22, 2014 For immediate release Alberta Blue Cross grant secures playground for new FCSS facility Cold Lake, AB – A Healthy Communities grant from Alberta Blue Cross will ensure families have a place to play and stay active outdoors when visiting the new Cold Lake and District Family and Community Support centre this fall. The $50,000 Healthy Communities grant will be used to purchase and install toddler and youth play structures at the new FCSS facility. “This is an excellent complement to the building, and will be a great addition for the community,” Cold Lake Mayor Craig Copeland said. “Cold Lake and District FCSS and the Parent Link Centre are focused on fostering healthy, happy families in our community and the outdoor playground fits perfectly.” Toddler play structures will be designed for use by children from one to four years of age, while youth play structures will ensure children five and up have suitable structures to play on as well. The playground will be open to the public and is being designed to encourage family play. “We want to promote healthy, active lifestyles while at the same time encourage strong family development,” Kim Schmidtz, Cold Lake and District FCSS Manager, said. “The health and social benefits of active play cannot be matched – an outdoor play area will ensure we have a well-rounded facility that can cater to all families’ needs.” The 13,000 square-foot, $4.5 million facility is proceeding on time and on budget for its fall opening. The facility will have dedicated space for FCSS Social Programming, Parent Link Centre Programming, as well as office space that can be used for outside service providers visiting the community. The Parent Link Centre will feature an indoor playground as well as a designated toddler area. “The building will meet all of our needs and now, thanks to the Alberta Blue Cross grant, the outside area will be tailored to our programming as well,” Schmidtz said. “The amount of support this project is receiving is overwhelming.” Through the Alberta Blue Cross Healthy Communities Grant Program, Alberta Blue Cross has committed to investing $1 million, over a five-year period, to support and promote active living in communities across Alberta. - 30 - coldlake
