In the 6am tragedy yesterday, the eldest son managed to escape from the double-storey semi-detached house at 14B, Pulau Li Hua, Upper Lanang by jumping down from the roof of the car porch from his bedroom. He then climbed over the wooden fence and sought the help of a neighbour, who lived across the street. Those killed were the suspect’s wife, 40, their daughter, 14, and two-year-old son. The son who survived is 17. The daughter was a Form Two student at SMK Chung Hua while the 17-year-old son is in Form Five at the same school. Police said the daughter was found on the bed in the master bedroom while the bodies of her mother and little sibling were found on the floor beside the bed. They have not established how exactly they were killed but it is believed that they were either gassed to death or suffocated. No injury or bloodstain was found on the bodies and inside the house, suggesting that they were not killed by force. Police said the teenager told them that his father owed people as much as RM3.5mil as he was not able to pay his debts. He also told police that the whole family was sleeping together in the master bedroom on Thursday night. He woke up at about 6am after hearing a hissing sound and was also disturbed by the smell of gas. The teen asked his father what had happened but the latter did not answer him. The teen then went back to sleep. When he woke up again at about 10am, his father hit him on the back of the neck with a bamboo stick. He told police that he then pretended to be sick and asked his father to give him medicine. Once his father left the room, he quickly opened the bedroom door and went out to the balcony. From there, he went to the roof of the car porch and jumped to the ground. He scaled the wooden fence and ran across the road to seek help from a neighbour. The furious father shouted at him from inside the gate and asked him to return home but the teen refused. The father then opened the gate and drove off in a black Toyota Hilux. Police received a call from the neighbour at about 10.09am and they arrived at the scene about 10.14am. The bodies of the mother and the two children were sent to the Sibu Hospital’s mortuary at about 1.18pm. In confirming the case, Sarawak Police Commissioner DCP Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani told The Star that it was a very sad incident. “We know the identity of the suspect. I hope he would turn himself in. Our men are now looking for him. It is just a matter of time before we arrest him.” In a latest update, the suspect has been arrested in Bintulu, about three hours’ drive from here. Police said he would be escorted back here this morning, and they would apply for a remand order in court at 2.30pm. He was arrested at 7.30pm beside a petrol station at KM5, Bintulu, and is believed to have tried to take his own life as a hose connected to the exhaust of his ride was found.
