NEWS UPDATE--BIG DAY AND NEW THINGS AT IUKA DERBY IUKA-They will be trying some new things at this year’s 7th Annual Iuka Demolition Derby by also creating a Lawnmower Demolition Derby, as well as inviting kids to bring their little battery operated cars in a Power Wheels Derby so the crowd can watch the youth bump into each other, according to event organizer Troy Owens. ... The gates open at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 17, for inspection of all of the types of entrants and close at 2:30 p.m., with the power wheels leading off the main event, which starts at 3 p.m. ... Large crowds and a lot of entries tend to be the rule at the regular demolition derby in Iuka, with its full size class (old iron included) as well as the compact class and pro-mod entries, but Owens liked the idea of adding derbies for the power mowers and for the little kids. ... “We’re probably going to set that up to have two different divisions,” Owens said of the kids event, with one division for those who are up to age five and a second division for those who are ages six to nine. ... As for the little kid’s cars, they should survive more or less intact. ... “You don’t demolish them,” Owens said. “You let them kind of run into each other for a little bit and then line them up to race from one end of the track to the other.” ...“They will be out on the track just like the big guys are,” he said. ... “I think the little kids’ power derby will be our big show,” Owens said, noting that calls have begun coming in. ... “We’re getting sponsors and we will have trophies for them,” said Owens. ... As for the lawn mower derby, Owens said there could be entrants from a wide area. ... “I’ve seen one lawn mower derby in my life and it was down at DuQuoin,” Owens said, but some of those people will be helping at Iuka. ... “I have some guys coming in to help put it on,” Owens said. ... “If they can get every body together, we are hoping to have people from Indiana, Kentucky and around southern Illinois,” he said. ... Last year’s regular derby had people enter from 13 counties, according to Owens. ... It’s not expected that the entrants will have problems finding cars for the derby that pays out $1,000 for first place in the full size cars, $500 for second place and $300 for third place, according to Owens. ... The battery operated power wheels derby entrants need to call ahead for pre-registration and rules, but they and the mowers need to be at the park sometime between the 11 a.m. opening of the gates and the closing of the gates for inspection and registration at 2:20 p.m. ... For questions about rules and registration, contact Owens at 292-8182 for more information.
