NEWS UPDATE AT 8AM WITH ORANGE As activists continue to downplay the recently passed HIV/AIDS control bill 2010, the chairman Uganda Aids Commission, Prof Vinand Nantulya, has also criticized the bill arguing that it is irrelevant and unnecessary. Nantulya says Compelling mothers to attend antenatal visits with their husbands who will be forced to test is impractical. According to the Aids Indicator survey 2011, 6 per cent of married couples in Uganda are living in discordant relationships. Members of parliament on the budget committee have called upon government to urgently avail the ministry of justice and constitutional affairs the additional amount of money needed to enable it settle court arrears. The legislators argue that lack of ample provision for court awards, human rights tribunal awards and compensation, have kept domestic arrears accumulating. The MPs now want government to stop selective compensation payments but rather come up with a clear policy on the payments for the Court Awards and Compensations which currently stand at sh164.2b. The inspector general of government Irene Mulyagonja has asked court for more time to conclude the investigations into a matter in which one of her staff is accused of soliciting for a 300 million bribe in order to exonerate the Acting Managing Director of National Social Security Fund Ms Geraldine Ssali, from the investigations she was carrying out against her. Presiding Magistrate Sarah Langa Siu adjourned the matter to June 24, to enable the IGG wind up the investigations before the full hearing can commence.
