NEWS UPDATE KYU WOES: Anti-riot police have deployed at Kyambogo University where striking lecturers insist they will not conduct lectures in protest of the reinstatement of Prof. Isaiah Omolo Ndiege as vice chancellor. The university council is today handing the institution back in the hands of the government after failing to secure a deal between the two sides. The lecturers say they cannot work under Ndiege earlier accused of mismanaging the institution. In their recommendations to government, council members want government to either dismiss the troubled VC or the defiant dons. BECKS FOR KNIGHTHOOD: David Beckham is set to receive a knighthood for his contribution to football and services to charity over the past two decades, it has been claimed. A report in the Sun on Sunday also alleges Prince William, who has forged a friendship with Beckham, is in line to carry out the ceremony. DRC-M23 DEAL: The Democratic Republic of Congo and defeated M23 rebels are set to sign a peace deal this afternoon in what diplomats hope will be a key step in efforts to end decades of war in the Great Lakes region. The signing is taking place in Kampala. Uganda which has in the past denied reports it supports the rebels says it will not however hand over the 1,500 fighters who fled into the country during the final assault. UACE 2013: The first 2013 Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education exams are underway across the country; students going in for Economics P1 and Biology P3; 116,027 students registered for this years exams. Head teachers at a number of private schools are however sceptical that many students are not ready for sub-mathematics and IT which two years ago became compulsory optional subjects. BUKANGA: The two-day nomination exercise ahead of the Bukanga by-election has kicked off today with calls on all stakeholders to adhere to the set guidelines. Successful candidates have between November 14th to 24th to campaign while the election will go down on November 26th. The seat fell vacant following the death of late holder, Gregory Matovu in October. REPATRIATING SOMALIS: More than 500,000 Somali refugees living in Kenya are to be returned to their home country after the UN refugee agency signed a tripartite agreement with the two governments. Under the agreement, the Somalis will be repatriated voluntarily over the next three years. The Somalis have sought refuge in Kenya from war and poverty. HAIYAN DEVASTATION: The head of the Red Cross in the Philippines has described the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan as absolute bedlam. Up to 10,000 people are believed to have died in Tacloban city and hundreds elsewhere. Hundreds of thousands of people are displaced. It has since made landfall in northern Vietnam, near the Chinese border, where it has weakened to a tropical storm. Some 600,000 people have been evacuated from at-risk regions in Vietnam and at least six people have been killed. BBC SHORTLIST: The five candidates for the 2013 BBC African Footballer of the Year award have been revealed. Ivory Coasts Yaya Toure has made the shortlist for the fifth consecutive year and is joined by Nigerians Victor Moses and John Mikel Obi, Burkina Fasos Jonathan Pitroipa and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Gabon. The winner will be decided by African football fans, who have until 1800 GMT on 25 November to vote for their choice.
