NEXT Friday, May 9, Drinking Liberally SLC Guest Speakers: The Salt Lake Tribune has a gun aimed at its heart, and the Deseret News has a twitchy trigger finger. The LDS Church-owned News tried to keep its plot to buy most of The Tribunes assets a secret, but an anonymous whistleblower alerted three Tribune staffers, who uncovered and recently wrote about the complex scheme. The next day, former Tribune reporter Joan OBrien fired off an impassioned letter to the DOJ Antitrust Division requesting an investigation -- and the Utah Newspaper Project was born to fight off the very real threat of Deseret News domination of the largest news daily between Denver and San Francisco. The Tribune, already gutted, appears headed for the auction block - or the executioners wall. Just think what life in Zion would be like without the Tribune. Would you like to know more? Drinking Liberally SLC invites you to hear from our Guest Panelists:. Joan OBrien - Utah Newspaper Project.org Patty Henetz - Utah Newspaper Project.org
